The meaning that adults have in biology is a term used to describe an animal that is with the capacity to reproduce. Adults are a social concept and a legal one in our world. Contrary to the concept of a non-adult or "minor" an legal adult is a person who is at the point of majority and is therefore regarded as autonomous, self-sufficient and dependable. An adult who is legally mature can be referred to as a major. The age of 18 is the standard minimum age to become an adult, although this may vary based on the country of origin and status in law, in addition to the maturity of the mind.

At the point that a person reaches physical and intellectual maturity, it is referred to as adulthood. Many people believe that the age of adulthood starts at 20 years or greater. Mid-life, beginning at about 40 years then follows by old age at about 60 years. Adulthood is divided into three stages beginning with early adulthood (18-mid-30s), mid-30s-mid-60s, then late adulthood from mid-60s up to end of life. As we enter the initial phases of adulthood (between 20-40) then our bodies are at their peak of maturity, even though the weight and height of our bodies may rise slightly. As we enter our early twenties, our physical abilities reach their maximum. They include strength of muscles and speed of reaction.
